CoinQuest
Financially Ready at Every Stage. K-12 adaptive learning powered by AI.
6 Worlds. Every Grade Level.
From counting coins to managing portfolios — each world is designed for a specific stage of learning.
Why CoinQuest?
Standards-Backed. Grade-by-Grade.
CoinQuest aligns to 6 national financial literacy frameworks — and goes beyond every one of them.
Select a grade to see exact standards alignment:
How It Works
Select your grade level, explore financial subjects, and complete interactive modules to earn coins. Every module is tied to real skills from national education standards. Track your progress, level up with your AI guide, and build a financial literacy portfolio.
Choose Your Grade
Stage-appropriate curriculum automatically adapts from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Explore Subjects
From Money Basics to Investing, each domain has interactive modules, quizzes, and real-world activities.
Meet Your Guide
6 AI-powered character guides — one for each age group — adapt to your level and walk you through every lesson.
Subjects
Every skill you need to master money — from counting coins to building wealth.
Welcome to the Worlds!
Each world is a domain of financial knowledge. Your character guide will walk you through skills built for your grade level. Master a world's challenges, and you've proven you own that area of money smarts.
Module
My Progress
Track your skills across all subjects.
Why track progress?
Research shows that visible progress tracking increases completion rates by 40%. This page shows exactly where you stand — what you've mastered, what's in progress, and what's next. No guessing.
Classroom Dashboard 🏫
Monitor student progress, assign modules, and track skill mastery.
Your classroom at a glance
This dashboard shows real-time mastery data for every student across all active domains. The heatmap highlights who needs help and who's excelling — so you can differentiate instruction without hours of manual tracking.
Parent Portal 👨👩👧
See your child's financial literacy progress and reinforce learning at home.
Why this matters for your family
The #1 predictor of a child's financial behavior is what they learn at home (University of Cambridge). Only 57% of U.S. adults are financially literate. This portal shows you exactly what your child is learning, how they're progressing, and gives you specific ways to learn alongside them.
School Administration 🏫
Manage teachers, view aggregate performance, and oversee your school's financial literacy program.
District Dashboard 🏛️
View all schools in your district, compare performance, and manage district-wide programs.
Standards Alignment 📋
CoinQuest maps to national financial literacy standards.
What are standards and why do they matter?
Standards are nationally recognized benchmarks that define what students should know at each grade level. School administrators and districts require standards alignment before adopting any curriculum. CoinQuest doesn't just meet the standards — it exceeds every major framework. This page is your proof.

1. Information We Collect
Account Information (when you create an account):
- Email address — used for login and account recovery
- Display name — shown to teachers and classmates (students choose their own)
- Role — student, teacher, or parent (determines what features you see)
- Grade level — used to show age-appropriate content
- School name — optional, for teachers creating classrooms
- Password — stored as a one-way hash (bcrypt). We never see or store your actual password.
Learning Data (collected as you use the platform):
- Module completion records, scores, and time spent
- Skill mastery status across all financial literacy subjects
- Coins earned and gamification progress
- Notes you create (stored on your account)
Without an account: CoinQuest works fully without signing up. All data is saved locally on your device via browser storage (localStorage) and never transmitted anywhere.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Personalization: Grade-level content, character guides, and module recommendations
- Progress tracking: Syncing your learning progress across devices when logged in
- Classroom features: Teachers can see their students' mastery data to provide targeted instruction
- Parent visibility: Linked parents can view their child's progress
- We never sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or any third party for commercial purposes
3. Children's Privacy (COPPA)
CoinQuest is designed for users ages 5-18. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for users under 13:
- Children under 13 should create accounts with parental or teacher supervision
- Parents and teachers can review, modify, or delete a child's account and data at any time
- We collect only the minimum information necessary for the educational service to function
- Data collected from children is never sold to third parties, period
- We do not serve behavioral advertising to any user
- No student names or PII are sent to AI services — PENNY receives only grade level and learning context, never student names or email addresses
Parental Consent: For school deployments, teachers or school administrators act as agents of parents for COPPA consent under the "school official" provision. For individual signups, users under 13 must have a parent or guardian create or supervise account creation. Parents may contact us at any time to review, download, or delete their child's data.
4. Student Data & FERPA
For school and district deployments, CoinQuest complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA):
- Student education records are protected under the "school official" exception
- Data is used solely for educational purposes — never for advertising, marketing, or profiling
- We execute Student Data Privacy Agreements (DPAs) with districts upon request. Contact us for our standard DPA template.
- Role-based access controls: Teachers see only their own classroom's students. Principals see all classrooms within their school. District administrators see aggregate data across schools. Students see only their own records.
- Parents may access only their linked child's data — not other students' records
- Student data is never shared between unrelated teachers, schools, or districts
- Upon termination of a DPA or district contract, all associated student data is deleted within 30 days
5. AI & Data Processing
PENNY, our AI guide, is powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o-mini language model:
- AI conversations are processed through OpenAI's API. OpenAI's privacy policy applies to message processing.
- We do not store conversation logs on our servers. Conversations exist only in your browser's memory for the current session.
- PENNY receives only grade level, character preference, and learning context — no student names, emails, or personally identifiable information are sent to OpenAI
- OpenAI model training: CoinQuest uses the OpenAI API, which does not use API inputs/outputs to train models by default. We have opted out of any data sharing for model improvement per OpenAI's data usage policies.
- All AI responses are constrained to educational financial literacy topics
- PENNY operates on a daily credit system (20 AI messages per day per user)
6. Data Storage & Security
- Database: Account and progress data is stored in a PostgreSQL database hosted by Neon (AWS US-East-2 region)
- Encryption in transit: All data between your browser and our servers is encrypted via TLS (HTTPS)
- Password security: Passwords are hashed with bcrypt (10 salt rounds). We never store plaintext passwords.
- Authentication: Sessions use JSON Web Tokens (JWT) with 7-day expiry. Tokens are stored in your browser's localStorage.
- Local fallback: If not logged in, all data stays on your device via localStorage
- Serverless architecture: Our backend runs on Netlify Functions — no persistent server stores your data in memory
7. Third-Party Services
- Neon (database): Stores account and progress data in AWS US-East-2 (United States). Neon's privacy policy applies.
- OpenAI: Powers PENNY AI conversations. API data is NOT used for model training. OpenAI's privacy policy applies.
- Netlify: Hosts the application and serverless functions. Netlify's privacy policy applies.
- SSO (Planned): Third-party single sign-on integration is on our product roadmap. When available, the SSO provider will act as an identity provider only — no student learning data will flow to third parties.
- Google Fonts: Serves typography (Nunito, Inter). Google's privacy policy applies to font loading.
- No advertising or third-party tracking services (Google Analytics, Mixpanel, etc.) are used on this platform.
- First-party usage analytics (opt-in only): If you consent, we collect anonymous data about pages visited, modules completed, and session duration to improve the learning experience. Analytics never include conversation content or personal information beyond your existing profile.
- Data residency: All student data is stored within the United States. We do not transfer student data outside the US.
7a. Usage Analytics Controls
CoinQuest uses a first-party, consent-based analytics system to understand how the platform is used and improve the learning experience. Analytics are opt-in, anonymous, and never shared with third parties. No third-party analytics services are used. You have full control over your analytics data.
8. Data Retention & Deletion
- Active accounts: Student learning data is retained for the duration of active enrollment.
- Account deletion: Upon account deletion request, all personally identifiable data is permanently removed from production databases within 30 days. Anonymized, de-identified aggregate data (e.g., module completion rates) may be retained for platform improvement.
- Inactive accounts: Accounts with no login activity for 12 months may be flagged for deletion. Users will be notified via email (if provided) 30 days before deletion.
- District contracts: Upon termination of a school or district agreement, all associated student data is deleted within 30 days unless a different timeline is specified in the DPA.
- Backups: Database backups are retained for a maximum of 7 days, after which deleted data is irrecoverable.
- Browser data: Local browser data (localStorage) is controlled entirely by the user and can be cleared at any time through browser settings.
9. Security Incident Response
In the event of a data breach or unauthorized access to student data:
- Investigation: We will investigate any suspected breach within 24 hours of discovery
- Notification: Affected schools, districts, and parents will be notified within 30 days of confirming a breach, or sooner as required by applicable state law
- Written report: A written incident report will be provided to affected parties within 15 business days, including: scope of data affected, remediation steps taken, and preventive measures implemented
- Law enforcement: We will cooperate with law enforcement as required and will not delay notification except as required by law enforcement investigation
- Legal process: We will comply with valid court orders, subpoenas, or government requests for data. We will notify affected users unless legally prohibited from doing so.
10. Accessibility (Section 508 / WCAG)
CoinQuest is committed to accessibility for all learners, including students with disabilities:
- The platform is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards
- All interactive elements are keyboard-navigable with visible focus indicators
- Semantic HTML, ARIA labels, and screen reader support are implemented throughout
- Accommodations available: Font size adjustment (80-150%), high contrast mode, reduced motion, voice narration, simplified language mode, and extended time for timed activities
- We conduct regular accessibility audits and welcome feedback on accessibility barriers
- To report an accessibility issue, contact: Jreaves31@gmail.com
11. Your Rights
- Access: View your data anytime through the Progress and Notes tabs. Teachers can generate classroom reports and export data as CSV.
- Analytics opt-out: Disable analytics collection at any time from this Privacy tab. View all collected data or request permanent deletion.
- Delete: Request account and data deletion by contacting us. All personally identifiable data is removed within 30 days. See Section 8 for full retention schedule.
- Portability: Teachers and administrators can export student data via CSV. Individual data export is available upon request.
- California residents: CCPA/CPRA rights are honored. You may request access to, deletion of, or restriction on processing of your personal information.
- State student privacy laws: We comply with applicable state student data privacy laws including SOPIPA (California), and equivalent statutes in other states.
- Parents: You have the right to review, download, and delete your child's data at any time by contacting us or through the parent dashboard.
